Reality shows: reality or real pain in the ass?
I've had a lot of time to watch tv recently, what with my surgery and all, and couldn't help but wonder what other people are thinking at this exact moment. More specifically I became both highly intrigued and completely offended when I was fooled (like the rest of america) into thinking there was an actually boy flying through the Colorado air in a Jiffy Pop ballon. I've been watching the massive out pouring of opinions that have resulted from this, well why not call it, lame ass controversy. This has led me to believe that reality shows are the demise of american culture as we know it. Why do I say this? Because the first reality shows were pretty cute and sweet, and had the whole "let's root for the underdog, hope the average joe makes it so that america can restore its faith in humanity" effect. However, that is no longer the purpose. In fact that effect lasted about, 2 secs? Where I'm going with this is that it seems reality shows are serving a much evil rooted purpose that they initially set out to. In the past 2 years, there have been reality show contestants accused and some proven guilty of murder, drug trafficking, sex offense, you name it. Why is this happening? I feel like reality shows are giving people who generally fit the criminal criteria an open arena to be well known, which I'm thinking is what they want in the first place. In any case, what can be done about this? Any thoughts...I'd love to know what you guys think.

Pain in the f***ing ass.
definitely 'pain in the ass'! i think people on certain reality shows totally lose whatever values they have (if they had any to begin with) and it becomes 'look at me, look at me' and screw everyone else. it's pretty sad, the only reality shows i like are documentaries from a behind-the-scenes point of view of people who are already well established or contributing to saving communities anywhere in the world (or anything fun and positive!). but the ones that follow people who have no real purpose in life except money, paparazzi & cat fights are ridiculous..it's not real!!!! (**runs away screaming...**)

" like a waking limb, pins and needles, nice to know you "
Den, YES...This whole being dependent on my loved ones and wasting away watching tv has made me rethink the way I was approaching life in terms of what I was thinking. I really do miss everything I was doing, I love it and embrace it so much more and the funny thing is that I miss my students, which I never though would actually happen
.
You know Chydie, I too watch Project Runway because I do think it has some substance. It's all the other ones that drive me insane.

I have to say that I have pretty much given up on any reality shows, I wasn't much for watching them to begin with. Actually, I don't really watch much TV at all, but I'm sure after surgery, there's just not a whole lot to do, so you're kind of stuck. Anyway, I agree with you, reality shows mostly suck!
